Chinese (Lunar) New Year Dragon Dance

It’s the Year of the Dragon and it’s time to dance with the Dragon!

The 10th February is Chinese New Year and we are entering the Year of the Dragon. The Dragon is a born master of ceremonies - of fireworks, parties, festivals, holidays. And the Wood Dragon is the king of dramatic parties. Let's celebrate this feisty and fiery energy and welcome the new year with a Dragon Dance.

Dragon is a classic Nia Routine, and is enduringly popular. It has powerful and unique dragon imagery and Asian visuals and music. This body of work will be led by Black Belt Nia teacher Fiona Glenn, and is guaranteed to set you up for the New Year and have you feeling energised, satisfied and at the same time calm and whole.

This is for Every Body - of all ages and fitness levels. New to Nia dancers and experienced students are welcome.

Feel free to wear any exercise or comfortable clothing that makes you feel good and free to move. Wearing something red on Chinese New Year is considered to be very good luck, and optional of course.

Nia is designed to be practised barefoot. If there are physical reasons not to practise barefoot, soft sole shoes can be worn.

Alexander Technique + Nia Workshop

Embody ease and grace with Alexander Technique + Nia.

Alexander Technique is a gentle and mindful learning approach which is effective for managing pain and tension. It is a skill which provides greater ease and efficiency in the way we move our bodies in all activities of life. The Alexander Technique teaches us to become aware of our habitual patterns that interfere with our natural co-ordination and by learning to prevent them we can improve our posture, performance and alertness. In this workshop Julianne will provide you with some basics that you will be able to incorprate into your everyday life.

Nia is a unique combination of 9 movement forms inspired by the dance arts, martial arts and healing arts, creating a synergy that moves far beyond a mere physical fitness class. The Alexander Technique is one of the three healing arts and its emphasis on effortless movement meshed perfectly with Nia's concept of doing things the easy way. It gave us 'The Dance of Movement from the Top'. After our session with Julianne, we will have an opportunity to play and explore in a Classic Nia class led by Fiona.

Everybody is welcome. No previous experience is necessary.

Wear comfortable clothes for moving in. While Nia is a barefoot practice, shoes are optional if this is your preference.

Bookings are essential as spaces are limited. Eventbrite will only accept Paypal. If you wish to pay with cash, credit card or direct debit, please contact Fiona 0409 443 253.

Dance4Dignity

Every day 48,000 Australian women face another night with nowhere to call home. Share the Dignity collects thousands of pads, tampons and personal hygiene products every year for women experiencing homelessness and poverty. Small dignities make a big difference... and you can too.

Join us for a special Nia class with 100% of funds raised going to #DANCE4DIGNITY. Register and pay your $20 donation here:

Saturday 1 June 9-10 am https://www.sharethedignity.com.au/events/dance4dignity-deakin-west/

Sunday 2 June 2-3pm https://www.sharethedignity.com.au/events/dance4dignity-greenway/

Share the Dignity was started because girls and women around Australia have to make makeshift pads from wadded up toilet paper, socks and newspaper because they cannot afford the basic of necessities!

#dance4dignity is happening across 25 locations around Australia on the weekend of the 1 & 2 June 2019.

This event was created to ensure that Share the Dignity can continue to provide girls and women with the basic of essentials, especially through their #Pinkbox Dignity Vending Machines.

These #Pinkbox Dignity Vending Machines are located in public toilets, charities, homeless hubs, domestic violence refuges, community centres, Aboriginal health services and schools across Australia.
