The Joy of Movement

What is Nia?

Imagine a workout that offers the expression of dance, the flexibility of yoga, the mindfulness of meditation, the power of martial arts, the ability to heal yourself, and so much more... this is Nia!

This sensory-based movement practise was created 40 years ago by Debbie and Carlos Rosas in California, US.  Nia is a unique combination of movement forms inspired by the dance arts, martial arts and healing arts. Underpinning everything in Nia is the Joy of Movement. It is essentially a fitness class that is practised barefoot, is low-impact and uses a diverse range of great, and sometimes unexpected, music.

Nia is for EveryBody

Nia can be an intense aerobic workout or more easy and gentle depending on the level of intensity you bring to the movement. This makes it perfect for the beginner, the athlete, and as a sustainable life-long practise.

Similar to yoga, there are principles and fundamentals that, as a person’s Nia practise grows, it begins to layer over all aspects of life. Diving deeper into Nia, either to become a teacher or simply to enhance your experience of life, the 52 Nia Principles are taught as intensive belt trainings - white, blue, brown and black belt.

It is my hope that we can share a journey together in the Joy of Movement, and you may receive the healing benefits for your body, mind, emotions and spirit that this practise has to offer you.
